Even if someone appreciates the full range , everyone has an ideal musical mode ; not just the nature of the tarradiddle , but the way it ’s distinguish , and the kinds of questions it explore . Their sci - fi happy position . Dark Matterhits that spot for me .

Dark Matter ( 2024 ): Jason Dessen is thrust into an alternating realness where he must face up an ominous version of himself . His pursuance to rejoin to his original animation leads him on a challenging journey to reunify with his family , sail the complexities of parallel universe .
It ’s foolhardy and thoughtful , structured like a thriller but fearless to sometimes dispute the hearing . It has a hang for ask the right interrogative sentence about the subject it wants to explore , and is more concerned in ride them out than providing easy answers . It embraces the mean of its medium to search its theme , and treat the actors like its greatest special effect . The scope of its story is intellectually grand but dramatically quite personal . It comes close to the touch of watchingDarkas anything I ’ve run into since .
Dark Matteris based on the 2016 novel of the same name byBlake Crouch , who is also the showrunner – he himself has claimed this adaptation is better than the informant material . I have n’t take it , and so ca n’t comment . But I can say , having seen the full , nine - episode season , that I came away convinced that tv set was the ideal means to secernate this story .
Dark Matter’s Story Structure Is Its Smartest Decision
The show can have its cake and eat it, too
Staying limited to what ’s been revealed so far , the premise is as follows : Jason Dessen ( Joel Edgerton ) begin the show with awhat if?moment . He teaches physics at a local university , but when his older champion Ryan ( Jimmi Simpson ) carry on his rise to extrusion by gain a esteemed science prize , we get the sense he could ’ve been much more . Instead , his priority has been his eff marriage ceremony to Daniela ( Jennifer Connelly ) and home life with their teen Word , Charlie ( Oakes Fegley ) . He might not be unhappy , exactly , butwe’ve caught Jason at a time of wondering what might ’ve been .
Then he produce abducted . After a strange chronological succession of case and an even stranger conversation with his mask attacker , he is drugged unconscious . When he wakes , he ’s in some facility he does n’t recognize , ring by people he ’s never met or has n’t envision in old age play like they have shared history . What they say about his aliveness is n’t what he remembers to be true . Meanwhile , his assaulter walks uncloak into Jason ’s home and is recognise with realization . He is another Jason – one who reached hiswhat if?moment earlier and had the scientific agency to do something about it .
Crouch ’s show is as interested in the impact of its ideas on its characters as in the noetic concept themselves , and the same is true for the audience experience . To feel confused is , sometimes , to empathize with a certain part , even from our more privileged linear perspective .
Jason2 discovered a way to get over the infinite act of parallel world that ramify each meter we make a decision , and find a world where he did n’t let Daniela go to quest for his research . He then forced upon Jason1 an opportunity to sell life sentence . Only , the abductee gets to experience the human beings where he ’s a successful scientist as a dissociative incubus . Dark Matterthen follows two disjoined plotlines : Jason1 ’s desperate struggle to find out what happen and return home , and Jason2 ’s delicate performance of a spirit he has n’t inhabit , where the smallest mistake could twist trust into suspicion .
This structure is its maven . Dark Matterplays out like two different sort of thriller , one propulsive and mysterious , the other insidious and paranoid . Information of all kind is treated as a wanted good , doled out to us slowly . We have prison term to ruminate over what each new line in the mechanics of the multiverse have in mind , both narratively and thematically . When a Modern remainder between the Jasons is let on , it both cast off light on the show ’s exploration of identity element and auspicate trouble for the pseud .
muddiness is similarly exert as a tool . While the show is n’t excessively opaque , close guarding of entropy sometimes means we do n’t fully understand what we ’re seeing when we see it . This uncertainty is very clearly intentional . Crouch ’s show is as interested in the impact of its ideas on its characters as in the rational concepts themselves , and the same is straight for the hearing ’s experience . To palpate disoriented is , sometimes , to empathize with a sure character , even from our more privileged view . AndinDark Matter , empathy is the path to understanding .
The Acting Is Everything In Dark Matter
Without Joel Edgerton, would this show even work?
That ’s what makes this story so sodding for the screen – as much as prose can drop us in a character ’s mind , there ’s nothing that generates empathy quite like the human expression . This serial publication feature fantabulous performances across the card , butEdgerton , peculiarly , is doing something special with his twofold role . Jason1 and Jason2 are n’t played with an exaggerated difference , and ca n’t be for this special meditation on personal identity to body of work . We have to wonder , as our paladin does , whether they’rereallythe same person . And , if so , whether that means he has the same potential difference for wickedness .
Edgerton has a talent for hold friendliness and malice in tension with just an face . His scene in movies likeThe Green KnightandThe Gift(which he also directed ) derive tension solely from our inability to translate his intentions with lucidity ; he achieves , to borrowDark Matter ’s of the essence physics term , a kind of worked up superposition principle . Jason2 is directly in this blood , and much of the intrigue in Jason1 ’s bow halt from him occasionally possess that same illegible gleam in his middle . He ’s a good somebody than his two-fold , but can he survive this without lose who he is ?
We have to marvel , as our Cuban sandwich does , whether they’rereallythe same person . And , if so , whether that means he has the same potentiality for darkness .
The rest of the cast pull off a similar trick in smaller doses . Each of them must balance how they are perceived by Jason , i.e. the function they play in his life ( and in the tale ) , with a more complex reality that wo n’t always match this simulacrum . Connelly is lambent as the woman of Jason ’s dreams , but Daniela , as Jason2 discovers , wo n’t be shove into so small a box seat . Amanda ( Alice Braga ) , a psychiatrist and the partner Jason2 left behind , has an arc suitable of her own show that could almost go unnoticed .
Apple TV+ is bonk for its unbelievable original display , especially in the sci - fi genre . Here is the ranking of every Apple TV+ sci - fi original series .
Which brings me to the feature ofDark Matterthat perhaps defines my sci - fi well-chosen space : This show rewards close attending . As is often the casing in multiverse story , there is plenty more to tease out beyond the narration being told on its surface . How much you get out of it will depend on how much you put in .
Considering these nine episodes exhaust the source material , I do n’t hump if Crouch and Apple TV+ plan to make more seasons . But I certainly hope so . I ’m not quite quick to leave this storyworld behind .
Dark Matterepisodes 1 & 2 will be available to stream on Apple TV+ on Wednesday , May 8 , with the continue sequence releasing each week on Wednesday .
