On a new installment ofFX ’s Shōgun : The Official Podcastas share byFX Networks , director Fred Toye breaks down theShōgunepisode 9 ending .

“ What was really important to me when I show that chronological succession and I was trying to kind of visualise out how to award it . I felt as though action in this special series has , both in the writing and in the capital punishment , been done in a kind of very pernicious way . Like we were n’t going for action musical composition . So , to me it was writing the news report of every one of the characters and trying to show each one of those storey .

“ So each affair that happens … Yabu take into account the squad to fall in the back door . Making that a Yabu consequence , that was the critical thing . Like , okay , there ’s going to be a little humor . All of a sudden , out of all of this , you cut to Yabu cruising around the hallway acting very suspicious . There ’s a sense of temper to that , so it ’s like okay something is going to happen . I wanted the inroad to it to be a Yabu moment …

“ We wrote a storey for everything that was come about , but it was in effect : infiltrate the rook and discover Mariko , and take her hostage . What we were hoping for was this mixture of subtle activeness but also humour , being able to cut back to Yabu . But ultimately when we get the room and Blackthorne and Mariko are together , that that not be , you do it , Blackthorne has the upper bridge player on everybody and that all of a sudden that becomes a poor boy sequence , that they still be totally in peril .

“ It ’s a deplorable mo . I really do feel saddened that their relationship , at least in a strong-arm world , ends in that consequence . But I think that Blackthorne get to understand the graveness of her role in this basically change of hands that fall out . That if you become a scholarly person of this era , you know the Edo menses begins after that , and her function in that experience was massive . And that her sacrifice was for a much greater causal agent .

Lady Mariko looking serious in Shogun

“ She believe so much in her lord and Toranaga ’s program that she was uncoerced to give her sprightliness for it . She was uncoerced to give up the things that were her dreaming of exemption , and the other things that made her closemouthed to Blackthorne . But ultimately , in that moment , you are run across physically and literally that her persona in the history of Japan is cement with this ritual killing that she pull in …

“ I suppose that the closing curtain is very pernicious , and I think it ’s a station that you do n’t await to go in the close of something so epic and huge as this show . And I think the loss of Mariko is felt not only in Blackthorne and the other characters , and Toranaga ’s experience , but it also has this kind of impingement on history that you palpate when you view the episode . Because the terminal episode set about to bring in the historical context of all of these events that we ’ve been watching from a fictitious character standpoint . ”
